Humming Machines
02:54
|
|||
I need to get away from the humming machines
their noise is creeping into my dreams
I used to be too busy to notice the sound
but now it echoes like July's cicada wings
Oh, take me away from the humming machines
some place to quiet my brain
when I get away I hope that I find
that the silence carries more than just pain
Beneath the sky, and this roof and the blue tv light
I sit next to you all alone
I'm tired and I'm restless and I need to lie down
so I turn on that humming sound
I'm tired and I'm restless but my body hums along
to the song of the humming machines

Maybe Maybelline
04:18
|
|||
Maybelline is a chapel girl resolute and chaste
prettier than a daffodil with curls down to her waste
she has smile lines to heaven and eyes of mossy green
and though we haven’t spoken I’m in love with Maybelline
maybe Maybelline my heart's cauterized
from a lifetime of lies and a thousand small things
let’s go for a ride and pretend we're in love
maybe Maybelline
I see her in the morning when the sky is tinged with rouge
I see her in the evening when the stars become confused
I play knuckles in the churchyard as the congregation sings
the honeysuckle’s fragrant and I dream of Maybelline
maybe Maybelline my heart's cauterized
from a lifetime of lies and a thousand small things
let’s go for a ride and pretend we're in love
maybe Maybelline
perhaps tonight I’ll see her as she’s walking
hair tied back with flowers and with string
she’ll look just like a willow in the moonlight
and I just might say something
I black my shoes with polish and I check my socks for holes
there’s a preacher in a big tent and today he’s saving souls
the canvas smells of brimstone and perfume and shaving cream
there’s salvation for the taking but all I want is Maybelline
maybe Maybelline my heart's cauterized
from a lifetime of lies and a thousand small things
let’s go for a ride and pretend we're in love
maybe Maybelline

Perennials
03:25
|
|||
she believes in perennials she collects old things
she has patience like a prairie reaching up toward monarch wings
she believes in the spring
she believes in perennials tries to dig a hole
to lie down with warm memories but the ground’s too hard and cold
she believes in the spring
pale light awakes me another early morn
two barred owls calling both distant and forlorn
she believes in
she believes (heaves)
in the spring

so the sun god slipped into her room
and he watched her face for just a moment
and he placed his hand upon her bed
and he said wake up you sleepyhead
for I have seen you walking underneath the sky
and you could love me if you’d only try
so the sun god paced around her room
and he spoke his thoughts and shuffling heavy
he laughed a laugh that made her frown
and she said go on get out of here
for I have seen you ride your lions through the sky
and you could never love me though you try
so the sun god stood upon her sill
and he turned his head and nodding blindly
he said I do and further still
I shall bring you flowers with the rain
for I have traced my colored fingers through the sky
and you could love me if you’d only try

Lila
04:33
|
|||
Lila what haven’t you done?
Lila, what haven’t you done?
Oh, Lila, Oh
She sang at the church downtown
And when she sang all the people gathered around
They claimed she sang for god But she knew her voice was her own
Oh, Lila, Oh
Oh Lila what haven’t you done?
You fell in love with a couple guys But you gave your vows to one
Your love he was a farmer and he was a dreamer like yourself
Oh Lila, Oh
Oh Lila where haven’t you been?
You’ve been raising four children, pigs, a rooster and some hens
And you traveled in the war Then you traveled some more Just to make sense of what you’d seen
Oh Lila, life it ain’t no dream
Lila, you’re gone now
Your memory has slipped from this busy world somehow
I’m singing this song So at least they’ll know your name
Oh, Lila, Oh

Weeds In The Wall
04:19
|
|||
Wander down this path just a little way
That’s where you’ll find me
Like a bottle on the ground I’ve been kicked all around
That’s how you’ll know me
From the corner of your eye as I softly flutter by
That’s how you’ll see me
Empty spaces in a poem help me to feel less lonely
I am God in Nature I am a weed in the wall
Lilacs in the front and poppies in the back I remember
Slide over in the pew so that I can sit with you
And rub your back
You told me I could find love from a source high above
That’s what they told you
In a church or on the ground, miracles to be found
Weeds in a Wall
We are God in Nature We are weeds in the wall
